BCACP/BCGP Clinical Session — The Cholesterol Limbo: How Low Should You Go?

Monday, November 13, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM CST at Lone Star Ballroom C2

Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0204-9999-23-290-L01-P
Activity Type: An Application-Based Activity

This session will focus on the hypercholesterolemia treatment recommendations and recent literature supporting the role of statin and nonstatin therapy. Faculty will review clinical trial data, especially with newer agents, as well as discuss the role of pharmacists in hypercholesterolemia management. Many clinicians follow the 2018 ACC-AHA cholesterol guideline recommendations as the “gold standard” evidence-based guideline by implementing a fixed-dose, intensity-based statin treatment. This may be appropriate for many patients. However, several high-risk patients may require more intense therapy and targeting further reductions in LDL-C with nonstatin therapy including ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, bempedoic acid, inclisiran, and icosapent ethyl. This presentation highlights how low cholesterol can go safely to reduce cardiovascular risk, especially in older adults. Interactive case studies will be used to facilitate learning.

This activity is approved for Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP) and Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) recertification credit.

The BCACP/BCGP Clinical Sessions are part of the professional development program for the recertification of board-certified ambulatory care pharmacists and board-certified geriatric care pharmacists by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and jointly provided by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In order to earn the BCACP or BCGP recertification credit, participants must attend the session, claim the continuing pharmacy education credit, and pass the associated posttest. Access to the BCACP/BCGP Clinical Sessions posttests will be available on February 7, 2024, at www.accp.com/myaccount to anyone who has purchased access to the BCACP or BCGP posttests. For participants who have not purchased access to the posttest, access can be purchased until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, at the ACCP Registration Desk. The deadline to submit posttests for these sessions will be December 17, 2024.
