BCACP/BCGP Clinical Session — Weighing In: The Risks and Benefits of Treating Obesity in Adults and Older Adults
Monday, November 13, 2023 from 11:15 AM to 12:45 PM CST at Lone Star Ballroom C2
Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0204-9999-23-327-L01-P
Activity Type: An Application-Based Activity
Although behavioral interventions are the foundation of weight management in adults, the effectiveness of these strategies may be limited. In older adults, there are limited data demonstrating that lifestyle interventions are best for both safety and efficacy. There are significant concerns that aggressive lifestyle measures for weight loss, especially through calorie restriction without resistance exercises in older adults may result in increased sarcopenia, frailty, functional decline, fractures, and malnutrition. The addition of pharmacologic therapies for long-term management of obesity may help adult patients achieve optimal outcomes. As the medications available for weight management increase, health professionals are faced with options for individualizing treatment regimens. The purpose of this session will be to review management strategies for weight loss, evaluate the latest literature on pharmacotherapy, and apply the guidance to clinical pharmacy practice in adult and older adult populations. Presenters will also discuss special considerations including pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes, polypharmacy, cognitive and functional status, caregiver involvement and care venues, food insecurity, and socioeconomic challenges for weight management in the older adult. Attendees will participate in case-based learning scenarios via the audience response system and an interactive activity that will increase familiarity with the risks and benefits of anti-obesity medications.
This activity is approved for Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP) and Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) recertification credit.
The BCACP/BCGP Clinical Sessions are part of the professional development program for the recertification of board-certified ambulatory care pharmacists and board-certified geriatric care pharmacists by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and jointly provided by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In order to earn the BCACP or BCGP recertification credit, participants must attend the session, claim the continuing pharmacy education credit, and pass the associated posttest. Access to the BCACP/BCGP Clinical Sessions posttests will be available on February 7, 2024, at www.accp.com/myaccount to anyone who has purchased access to the BCACP or BCGP posttests.
