Drug Information PRN Focus Session — The Intersection of Formulary Management, Technology, and Pharmacogenomics to Maximize Patient Care

Sunday, November 12, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM CST at Lone Star Ballroom A4

Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0217-0000-23-131-L05-P
Activity Type: A Knowledge-Based Activity

An effective drug formulary process goes beyond evaluating published literature on safety and efficacy. The formulary process must also consider logistical and practical issues that ensure safe medication use and access to the most appropriate therapy for the patient. Prescribing based on pharmacogenomics and precision medicine is causing typical formulary management paradigms to evolve. In addition, after a formulary decision is made, integrating technology updates into the process is required. Potential technology updates may range from changes to the electronic health record ( e.g., criteria for use, safety-related alerts, genetic testing needs); addition to a smart infusion drug library, automated dispensing cabinet or sterile compounding software; and how to best disseminate prescriber and nurse education. Identifying the scope of the formulary implementation process (and the risks of implementing poorly) in a proactive manner may prevent errors or facilitate access to the most appropriate therapy for the patient.  This session will focus on two aspects of the behind the scenes considerations that are required for contemporary formulary changes. The session will be divided into two presentations and allow ample time for Q&A.  The first presentation will discuss formulary-related technology changes that help to ensure safe medication use, and the second presentation will discuss the current and future impact of pharmacogenomics on formulary management.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify the components of an effective drug formulary process, including the evaluation of safety and efficacy, logistical and practical considerations, and the use of pharmacogenomics and precision medicine.
2. Describe the role of technology in formulary management, e.g., maximizing the electronic health record, smart infusion drug library, automated dispensing cabinet software.
3. Explain the importance of integrating technology updates into the formulary process to ensure safe medication use and access to appropriate therapy for patients.
4. Discuss risks associated with poorly implemented formulary changes and proactive measures to prevent errors and ensure appropriate patient therapy.
5. Analyze the impact of pharmacogenomics on formulary management, including the challenges and opportunities that arise from precision medicine approaches to prescribing.
6. Evaluate the current and future impact of pharmacogenomics on the formulary process and strategies for integrating precision medicine into formulary management paradigms.
