At this point, we make the assumption that everyone has heard the terms stress, well-being, burnout, and other terms related to someone’s physical, emotional, and mental health. We have a lot of information available about the signs, symptoms, and tools used to differentiate between short-term stress, “healthy” stress, and “unhealthy” burnout, but are not always sure which to use or what to do with results. Conversely, the opposite of burnout is engagement. It’s why some students, residents, and practitioners feel burned out after 40 hours of studying or work and others can’t wait for their next overnight shift. We know stress and burnout are not universally fixed with pizza, days off, and relaxation techniques, but can be addressed by identifying the underlying cause (stress threshold) and developing skills to cope and foster resilience; one such skill may be the growth mindset. The target may be the individual, the stressful environment, or sometimes both. This session will help foster discussion about all of these elements in assessing and maintaining the health of pharmacy learners and practitioners.
Please note: If attendees are enrolled or plan to enroll in the Teaching and Learning Academy, this session counts toward Academy credit. In order to receive Teaching and Learning Academy credit, Academy enrollees must sign in during the session.
