Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics/Pharmacogenomics and Pain and Palliative Care PRN Focus Session — Personalized Pain Management: Evaluating the Clinical Utility and Application of Pharmacogenetics
Tuesday, October 15, 2024 from 1:15 PM to 2:45 PM MST
Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0217-0000-24-135-L01-P
Activity Type: A Knowledge-Based Activity
There are a variety of pharmacogenetic testing reports that include recommendations for personalizing medications commonly used for pain management, including opioids, NSAIDs, and antidepressants. The evidence base for these recommendations provided by laboratory reports can be variable, which can create confusion for pharmacists when applying these results to patient prescribing decisions. The goals of this session are to (1) explore the evidence for the clinical utility of personalizing pain management treatment for commonly tested pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic pharmacogenes, (2) review considerations for interpreting pharmacogenetic test reports in the context of this evidence, and (3) discuss existing limitations of applying pharmacogenetics in pain management.
