Introduction to Observational Studies

This program will describe the basic steps to conduct observational research, observational study designs (cohort and case-control) commonly used in clinical effectiveness studies, and threats to internal validity (bias and confounding).
This session is open to all meeting registrants and is part of the Research and Scholarship Academy programming.

1. Describe research designs commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of healthcare interventions.
2. Define selection bias, confounding bias and information bias.
3. Identify potential confounding variables for the learner’s area of research interest.
