This interactive session will address the nuances in determining a blood pressure goal in older adults based on various guideline recommendations and recent published work (e.g. SPRINT, STEP, AAFP/ACP, 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines, ISH 2020). The 2017 ACC/AHA Hypertension Guidelines adopted a more strict blood pressure goal compared to previous guidelines, however the American Academy of Family Physicians and American College of Physicians rejected these recommendations in their subsequent treatment guidelines. This inconsistency between guidelines has led to disagreement and ambiguity amongst colleagues regarding the optimal approach to treating hypertension in older adults. “Pro” and “con” speakers will address the strengths and weaknesses of related guidelines and evidence and provide practical examples using cases. Following the session, attendees will be able to develop a patient-specific hypertension treatment plan for older adults who fall outside of typical guideline recommendations.
