ACCP Members Serve as Authors on GTMRx Review in American Journal of Medicine

To advance medication optimization and the implementation of comprehensive medication management (CMM), the Get the Medications Right Institute (GTMRx) has enlisted volunteers and staff of its member organizations, including ACCP, to disseminate evidence supporting the value of CMM. Among their recent work is a review article, “Assessing the Impact of Comprehensive Medication Management on Achievement of the Quadruple Aim,” published in the April issue of the American Journal of Medicine.1 This article provides an overview of the CMM process of care and highlights recent research on the value of CMM in achieving the quadruple aim: better quality care, reduced health care expenditures, an improved patient experience, and greater provider well-being. Over 20 studies were included in the review, ranging from single-center retrospective analyses to multicenter randomized controlled studies, and included sites throughout the United States and Brazil.
As noted by the lead author, M. Shawn McFarland, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCACP,

From the College’s funding of the CMM Effectiveness and Implementation Grant and the subsequent research reported by the CMM in Primary Care Research Team, to working as part of GTMRx to promote its value, ACCP supports CMM as the future pathway to achieving medication optimization. We hope that this paper stimulates expansion of this practice and prompts further research in areas of need surrounding CMM.

Additional authors of the review were Marcia L. Buck, Pharm.D., FCCP, FPPA, BCPPS; Erica Crannage, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, BCACP; Lori T. Armistead, Pharm.D., M.A.; Heather Ourth, Pharm.D., FASHP, BCPS, BCGP; Shannon W. Finks, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS; and Mary Roth McClurg, Pharm.D., MHS, FCCP, writing on behalf of GTMRx. ACCP is honored to acknowledge that all authors are ACCP members, representing either ACCP or the Veterans Health Administration. This article is a component of GTMRx’s strategy to disseminate the value of CMM to a wide range of stakeholders within health care. Additional papers, including recommendations for standardization of metrics for assessing CMM and a gap assessment of the current CMM literature and recommendations for future research, are in progress, as are issue briefs, use cases, and infographics to introduce CMM to patients, providers, and payers. ACCP members who wish to be considered for participation in future GTMRx projects are encouraged to become a signing member and indicate their interest in volunteering for a workgroup.
