ACCP Members Contribute to ATS and ISMP Guidelines

ACCP members Brittany D. Bissell, Pharm.D., Ph.D., FCCM, BCCCP, and Past President Brian L. Erstad, Pharm.D., MCCM, FCCP, FASHP, were recently selected for the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Guideline Methodology Training Program. This highly competitive program consists of a workshop focused on guideline terminology and development, followed by the opportunity to serve on a guideline writing panel as a methodology scholar working under the guidance of the methodologist on the panel. Bissell and Erstad are the first clinical pharmacists to be selected for the program during its 9-year existence. They are currently serving as methodology scholars on the 2023 ATS/IDSA Community-Acquired Pneumonia guidelines. A recently published overview of the program, including a survey of current and past program participants, highlights its value, with 98% of participants rating their increased knowledge of evidence synthesis as very useful or essential to their careers.

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) recently released new Guidelines for Safe Medication Use in Perioperative and Procedural Settings, which are based on the contributions of an interprofessional group of health care providers participating in the National Summit on Perioperative Medication Safety. Participants included ACCP members Rachel Stratman Wolfe, Pharm.D., MHA, BCCCP; Lynda Olson, Pharm.D., BCCCP; James G. Stevenson, Pharm.D., BCPS; and Emily B. Holcomb, Pharm.D., MBA, FISMP, BCPS. As noted by Wolfe,

[This guideline] increases awareness of medication safety best practices and encourages organizations to be curious. Through curiosity and interdisciplinary collaboration, we can reduce medication-related patient harm in the perioperative and procedural setting.

ACCP applauds the work of these individuals and appreciates the efforts of all of its members who are working to develop, review, or implement new clinical practice guidelines and their dedication to optimizing patient care.
