At its February meeting, the GTMRx Institute board of directors voted to approve the appointment of Susan M. Huang, M.D., M.S., to the GTMRx board. As chief medical officer and a key member of the America’s Physician Groups (APG) leadership team, Huang is the lead contact with APG’s member organizations on clinical matters related to their participation in value-based care. Together with APG’s Washington, D.C.- and California-based policy and advocacy teams, she serves as lead clinical liaison with federal and state agencies, hospitals and health systems, health plans, and other organizations. Huang oversees the collection and sharing of APG member best practices and analyses of member data demonstrating APG’s strong performance and accountability for costs and quality of care.

APG is a national association representing more than 360 physician groups with around 170,000 physicians providing care to almost 90 million patients. APG’s motto, “Taking Responsibility for America’s Health,” represents its members’ commitment to clinically integrated, coordinated, value-based health care in which physician groups are accountable for the costs and quality of patient care. Members provide comprehensive health care through coordinated and accountable physician group practices. APG strongly believes that patient-centered, coordinated, and accountable care offers the highest-quality, most efficient delivery mechanism and the greatest value for patients. APG’s understanding of the value of medication optimization achieved through CMM led the organization to join GTMRx.

Reflecting on her decision to join GTMRx’s leadership, Huang stated:

Helping patients get the right medications at the right dose, right time, and for the right reasons is a critical component of clinical accountability and opportunity in value-based care. I’m joining the GTMRx board because I also believe deeply as a primary care physician that being able to optimize and support appropriate medication use and management is a fundamental core value in building and sustaining the trust we have with our patients.

She added, “And with the myriad of responsibilities and increasingly unmanageable burdens that primary care physicians face today, we need the support of and expertise on our care teams to help us get the medications right.”

GTMRx President Paul Grundy, M.D., MPH, FACOEM, FACPM, welcomed Huang to the board, stating:

APG’s commitment to quality, value-based patient care is aligned with GTMRx’s mission to bring critical stakeholders together, bound by the urgent need to optimize outcomes and reduce costs by getting the medications right. Huang brings to GTMRx additional physician perspective on best practices – in particular, the need to ensure appropriate and personalized use of medication and gene therapies by advancing a scientific, evidence-based, and cost-effective decision-making process and a team-based, systematic approach to medication use. We look forward to working with Susan and APG.

Also during its February meeting, the GTMRx board of directors voted to appoint ACCP Executive Director Michael S. Maddux, Pharm.D., FCCP, to the position of Secretary-Treasurer. Maddux joined the GTMRx board in November 2022 as GTMRx treasurer, succeeding C. Edwin Webb, Pharm.D., MPH, FCCP, as GTMRx treasurer and ACCP’s board representative after Webb entered full-time retirement last fall. In addition to overseeing GTMRx financials and serving on the board’s Executive Committee, Maddux will be responsible for documenting Board and Executive Committee meeting minutes and agendas.

Grundy praised Webb for his outstanding commitment and service to GTMRx since its inception in 2019 and welcomed Maddux to his new position as Secretary-Treasurer, stating:

Through Dr. Webb’s efforts, ACCP’s commitment to getting the medications right has provided critical support to the GTMRx mission. Dr. Maddux has displayed the same level of dedication and leadership to the board in his position as Treasurer and we welcome him to the expanded role as Secretary-Treasurer.
