Session Overview

The Fundamentals of Biostatistics and Clinical Trial Design Workshop is presented by two of ACCP’s most dynamic and knowledgeable faculty, Drs. Soric and Suda. This workshop is ideal for clinical pharmacists who plan to sit for a Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) exam, or are interested in learning more about biostatistics and trial design.

Program Content

The workshop is divided into two major sections:

  1. An overview of descriptive versus interferential statistics, factors that influence errors and how to estimate sample size, and choosing the appropriate statistics test.
  2. Observational and interventional study designs and methodologies, how to best interpret measures of association, and screenings in medicine.

Target Audience and Learning Objectives

Clinical pharmacists with an interest in statistics and trial design and clinical pharmacists who plan to sit for a BPS specialty exam.

At the conclusion of the program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe hypothesis testing and state the meaning of and distinguish between p values and confidence intervals and measures of central tendency and data spread.

  2. Delineate the key attributes of study variables (study data) and the primary levels/categories of data measurement (give examples of each). Develop examples of converting data from one level/category to another.

  3. Determine why a statistical test is appropriate or not appropriate, given the sample distribution, data type, and study design. Interpret statistical and clinical significance for results from commonly used statistical tests.

  4. Differentiate and recognize the designs and structures of key studies utilized in medical publications.

  5. Define and interpret key study-related concepts and terms.

  6. Describe and calculate the most important epidemiological terms associated with healthcare and research.

  7. Describe and calculate the key terms associated with healthcare screenings.

Methods and CE Requirements

Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit

Activities consist of audio/video/PDF files, attestation statement, and activity evaluation. ACPE-accredited providers, like ACCP, are responsible for transmitting this information to NABP to be stored in the CPE Monitor system. Statements of credit will be available at CPE Monitor, nabp.pharmacy/cpe-monitor-service/, within 2–3 business days after completion of this activity.
