Target Audience

The symposium is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy trainees caring for patients with cardiovascular diseases in all practice settings. 

Symposium Goal

The symposium will discuss recent updates to guidelines for the management of common chronic and acute cardiovascular diseases and analyze findings from key practice-changing clinical trials that advance healthcare. Sessions will employ case-based learning to engage participants in activities that enable them to translate published evidence into daily practice and improve outcomes associated with patient care services.

Symposium Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participant should be able to:

1. Apply current guidelines and recent clinical trial evidence for managing hypertension, dyslipidemia, and heart failure.
2. Provide evidence-based, individualized recommendations for therapy with antithrombotic agents.
3. Recommend optimal strategies for the pharmacological management of patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome.
4. Devise outcome measures to assess, document, and advance the quality and cost-effectiveness of patient care services provided by pharmacists.

Session Learning Objectives

Clinical Guidelines: Updates in Hypertension, Dyslipidemia, and Heart Failure

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

1. Develop a guideline-based treatment plan for patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and heart failure.
2. Recognize the limitations of recent trials in patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and heart failure in developing individualized treatment plans.
3. Devise suitable monitoring plans to ensure safe use of medications in patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and heart failure.

Antithrombotic Agents: Clinical Evidence and Agent Selection

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

1. Differentiate between common chronic antithrombotic agents used in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation, and patients with ischemic heart disease.
2. Recommend an individualized treatment plan to reduce stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
3. Determine a suitable antithrombotic regimen for patients with stable ischemic heart disease.

Acute Coronary Syndrome: Optimal Pharmacotherapy Strategies

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

1. Develop an acute treatment plan for a patient presenting with acute coronary syndromes.
2. Choose a suitable antithrombotic regimen for patients with acute coronary syndromes.
3. Create a secondary prevention plan after an acute coronary syndrome.

Measuring Outcomes Associated with Pharmacist Services

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

1. Ascertain target cardiac conditions which may benefit from pharmacist services.
2. Identify potential measures for examining pharmacist services in cardiology.
3. Develop an outline for a program to measure the quality of outcomes associated with pharmacist services in cardiology.

Certificates of attendance will be granted to participants attending the entire symposium.

*Registration fee includes program book, opportunity to earn 6.0 application-based, continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits, a certificate of attendance, and two coffee breaks. Lunch is provided, on first come-first serve basis, for attendees who complete their registrations and pick up lunch vouchers at the OPL congress registration desk.

Cancellation Policy:

• Registration cancellations for the ACCP International Symposium must be notified in writing, by email to ACCP at [email protected].
• Cancellations received on or before October 15, 2018 will be refunded the registration fees, less an administration charge of $50.
• Cancellations made after October 15, 2018 and no shows are not eligible for a refund.
• Refunds will be processed 4 weeks after the event completion date.
