Holstad Named ACCP Director of Research

Sheldon Holstad, Pharm.D.

Sheldon Holstad, Pharm.D., has been named ACCP Director of Research after a national search. Dr. Holstad will serve as a member of the ACCP senior staff and as the chief operations officer for the ACCP Research Institute, promoting communication between the Research Institute Board of Trustees and the ACCP Board of Regents, and directing and supervising the Research Institute staff. His duties will include oversight of the ACCP Practice-Based Research Network and initiatives that facilitate investigator development, including the Focused Investigator Training (F.I.T.) Program and the ACCP Academy Research and Scholarship Program.

Dr. Holstad received his B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. After completing a Psychopharmacology Research Fellowship, also at the University of Iowa, he joined the faculty of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. When selected as ACCP Director of Research, he was serving as professor and interim dean at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

“The unique opportunities afforded in this position, specifically the chance to help lead and contribute to the development of clinical pharmacist researchers and the advancement of practice-based research, are what really attracted me to this position,” Dr. Holstad commented. “Enhancing the visibility of research within the organization while revitalizing member interest in research and scholarship will be among my early priorities. Also, expanding the Research Institute’s programs and services will be important if we are to fully accomplish the research-related objectives of the ACCP strategic plan. By building on the solid foundation already in place, there’s real opportunity to move to the next level and significantly enhance the benefits that the Research Institute provides to ACCP members and the clinical pharmacy discipline. I look forward to working with the Institute’s Board of Trustees and the ACCP Board of Regents to help make their collective vision a reality.”

Dr. Holstad has been an active member of ACCP since 1988 and has chaired ACCP committees, served as a faculty member in the ACCP Academy Teaching and Learning Program, and contributed to ACCP educational programs and publications. During his academic career, he has served in many research and leadership roles, including associate division director, division director, IRB chairman, and interim dean.

“We are pleased to welcome Sheldon to the ACCP senior staff,” noted ACCP Executive Director Michael Maddux. “His commitment to enhancing the College’s research-related endeavors, strong background in administration, and ability to contribute in a ‘servant-leader’ role is a good match for both ACCP and the Research Institute. It’s clear that he thoroughly understands what is needed for the College to achieve its vision for future research-related activities.”

Dr. Holstad resides in St. Louis with his wife, Beth, an audiologist. They have two children: Kayla, a student in Syracuse University’s doctor of audiology program, and Ryan, a graduate student in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan.
