Winners of the Best Student and Best Resident or Fellow Poster awards from the 2023 ACCP Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, were announced Monday, November 13, 2023, after they delivered platform presentations of their research. In all, almost 500 posters were presented at the Annual Meeting. Papers described original research, innovative clinical pharmacy services and programs, case reports, systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and student, resident, and fellow research-in-progress.

Joel Arackal, winner of the ACCP Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award.

Joel Arackal, a health outcomes research fellow at the Center for Outcomes Research and Education at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri, won the Best Resident or Fellow Poster Award for “Beta-Lactam De-escalation Reduces the Risk of New Antibiotic-Resistant Gram-negative Pathogens in Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis.” His coauthors were Besu Teshome and Jaylana Ahmetspahic from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri; Taehwan Park from St. John’s University in Queens, New York; Nicholas Hampton and Marin Kollef from BJC HealthCare Center for Clinical Excellence in St. Louis, Missouri; and Scott Micek from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

The other finalist in the Best Resident or Fellow Poster competition was Ting Ting Wu, a pharmacy research fellow at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Wu presented two posters, both of which were finalists for the Best Resident or Fellow Poster Award. Wu’s coauthors for her poster titled “Comparison of Continuous Synthetic Opioids to Morphine in Time to Extubation in Critically Ill Adults” were Yun-Shiuan Lin and John Devlin, also from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts; Louisa Smith from Northeastern University in Portland, Maine; and Arjen Slooter from the University Medical Center in Utrecht, Netherlands. Wu also presented “Clonidine Is Associated with a Faster Resolution of Incident ICU Delirium than Antipsychotics.” Her coauthors were Gillian Steiger and John Devlin, also from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts; Louisa Smith from Northeastern University in Portland, Maine; and Arjen Slooter from the University Medical Center in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Layna Fox from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, won the Best Student Poster Award for “Evaluation of CPY2C19 Genotype-Guided Antiplatelet Therapy in Patients Undergoing Intracranial Aneurysm Treatment with Flow Diversion Stenting in a Real-World Clinical Setting.” Fox’s coauthors were Kayla Tunehag, Anh Nguyen, and Craig Lee, also from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy; and Samuel Reed, Darshan Shastri, Nathan Quig, George A. Stouffer, and Sten Solander from the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The other student finalists in this category were Madelyn Arndt from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Hang Lin from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy in Buffalo, New York. Arndt presented “Analysis of Gabapentin Adverse Events and Misuse Reported Through Tweets: A Feasibility Study.” Her coauthors were Kyle E. Hultgren from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; Katrina Lepro, Lia Ferraccio, MacKenzie Kirsch, Jordan Covvey, and Branden Nemecek, also from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Sorina Torrez, Kelly Reveles, and Kirk Evoy from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Lin presented “Trends in Hyperpolypharmacy and Prescription Expenditures Among U.S. Older Adults, 2002–2017.” Lin’s coauthors were Aman Patel, Steven Feuerstein, David M. Jacobs, and Collin M. Clark, also from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy in Buffalo, New York; and Amanda A. Foster from St. John Fisher University Wegmans School of Pharmacy, Rochester, New York.

Each winner received a plaque. Serving as judges for the Best Student Poster competition were Deborah Booth, Dave Dixon, Cynthia Sanoski, Harminder Sikand, and Dustin Spencer. Serving as judges for the Best Resident or Fellow Poster competition were Julie Banderas, Michelle Fravel, Daniel Majerczyk, and Mary Beth O’Connell.
