Student Chapter Spotlight

University of Toledo

Written by Rachael Pirrami, Pharm.D./MBA Candidate 2025, The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

In 2022, the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UTCPPS) Student College of Clinical Pharmacy (SCCP) chapter was named the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Outstanding Chapter of the Year. As part of winning the award, UTCPPS received $1000 and funded the now-annual Leadership Summit.

The purpose of the Leadership Summit was to bring the Ohio SCCP chapters together to network and share ideas. Planning began in early December, and each college of pharmacy SCCP chapter in Ohio was invited, including chapters from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy, Cedarville University College of Pharmacy, and University of Findlay College of Pharmacy. Two or three students and one or two faculty members were invited from each school. If the college did not have an established SCCP chapter, the faculty liaison and student liaison were contacted by email. Upon contact, they were asked about sending an interested representative who would start an SCCP chapter at their university in order to have full representation by all Ohio colleges of pharmacy present at the event.

The Leadership Summit was a 2-day event hosted in mid-April 2023. The first day was dedicated to networking, and the following day focused on sharing successful practices or chapter events hosted by each school. All schools invited were in attendance except for the University of Cincinnati and Ohio Northern University. On Friday evening, school representatives and advisers arrived in Toledo, and everyone met at Copper Moon, a local Toledo company that specializes in glass crafting. At Copper Moon, everyone designed two glass magnets while conversing with one another. After Copper Moon, the group headed to a local University of Toledo pizza restaurant known as Stubborn Brother, where everyone enjoyed pizza and salad while continuing to get to know each other. After the late dinner, everyone departed to their hotels and met again Saturday morning for programming at the University of Toledo.

On Saturday morning, all school representatives and advisers gathered for a light breakfast before beginning the presentations. Dr. Mary “Molly” Amos, the Ohio College of Clinical Pharmacy chapter president, gave the first presentation. She spoke to the students about the importance of being a leader and how leadership can look different at every level, such as being a student, resident, or pharmacist. After Amos finished her presentation, the students began giving their presentations. Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy presented first. They discussed a leadership pearl regarding summer and semester pre-planning to ensure a successful school year. Next to present was the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy, which spoke on behalf of its annual Pharmacy Pharmal. They displayed the resources and planning needed to host a formal for all students and faculty. Cedarville University College of Pharmacy presented afterward about their annual Clinical Coffee Hour, where they host clinical pharmacists and essentially participate in roundtables to teach students about clinical pharmacy and the role of a clinical pharmacist. Finally, the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences presented on how to host a leadership summit. The goal of a live event was to persuade one of the attending schools to host an event the following year.

After the presentations, Amos discussed proposing a Leadership Summit Funding Award to assist the other Ohio colleges of pharmacy in hosting this event. Before the year ended, the Leadership Summit Funding Award was passed by the Ohio College of Clinical Pharmacy voting body and was subsequently awarded to Cedarville University College of Pharmacy. Cedarville University plans to host the Leadership Summit around mid-April 2024 and intends to find ways to improve the overall experience for all attendees.
