Miller to Receive 2020 Whitney Award

ACCP Founding Member and Past President William A. Miller, M.Sc., Pharm.D., FCCP, FASHP, has been named recipient of the 2020 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award, health-system pharmacy’s highest honor. He will receive the award at the ASHP Summer Meetings & Exhibition in June.

Miller, also a member of the founding ACCP Board of Regents, served as chair of the Pharmacotherapy Publications, Inc. (PPI) board of directors from 2004 to 2014 and is a current member of the PPI board. He has chaired and served on countless ACCP committees and task forces.

During his 50-year career, Miller has been an influential clinical pharmacist, author, educator, mentor, and leader. He has worked tirelessly to position clinical pharmacists on the front lines of patient care and to ensure excellence in residency training programs. Consequently, Miller has received many ACCP awards for his contributions to ACCP and clinical pharmacy: the ACCP President’s Award, the Research Institute Service Award, the Education Award, and the Paul F. Parker Medal. He has also been honored with other prestigious awards, including the ASHP Award for Professional Achievement, the President’s Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Robert G. Leonard Memorial Lecturer Award from the University of Texas, the Ebert Memorial Lecture from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy, the Clifton J. Latiolais Award from The Ohio State University, and the Merck Lecture Award from Drake University.

Asked to comment on receiving the Whitney Award, Miller stated:

I am grateful to the pharmacy organizational leaders and members of ASHP, ACCP, AACP and APhA that I have had the privilege to work with to advance pharmacy practice and education. I am also grateful to the faculty and pharmacists at five colleges of pharmacy that believed in my vision for pharmacy education and comprehensive pharmacy services. By surrounding myself with talented people, I achieved many of my goals and aspirations to advance pharmacy as a health profession. My selection as the 2020 ASHP Whitney Award recipient could not have happened without the work and support of so many professional colleagues and friends.

Miller is the author of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a past president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He served on the ASHP Commission on Credentialing (COC) for 6 years, where he was chair for 2 years. In addition, Miller has served as both a guest surveyor and a lead accreditation surveyor for ASHP for 32 years. He has served as an instructor and professor in the colleges of pharmacy at the University of Kentucky, The Ohio State University, the University of Tennessee, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Iowa, where he is recognized as a professor emeritus. He has also served as the director of pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center and as college of pharmacy department chair at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Iowa.

Miller earned a B.S. degree in pharmacy and an M.S. degree in pharmacy from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and a Pharm.D. degree from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.
